Yeah, the ones here move kind of slow, even when bothered. They aren't like the ones I saw down in San Diego, which moved much faster when bothered.

I agree, these are Solenopsis invicta. Fire ants quickly swarm onto someone who bothers their nest, stinging as they go! But out foraging, they often have the innocuous, easy-going look you describe.

FYI. I never saw RIFAs around my nest last year. Only Argentine ants like last month from the heavy rain to come in.
